Newsletter – October 2008 Tuesday, Oct 28 2008

Hello all Camera Club members

Last Meeting

9th October – Kaikohe

Annie stepped in at the last moment and did her talk on child photography.  It was wonderful. Annie’s talk was on psychology as much as photography.  Interacting with the children, setting the environment, and dealing with parents.  She even brought along toys and rugs, not the usual for a photography talk but this is what Annie’s photography is about.  She brings feelings of warmth and emotion to photography that is present in her work.

We had a good selection of pictures ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ and had a group critique on these.  John has then taken them for a more in depth critique.

Coming meeting – November – Kerikeri

Date:                                    13th November
Time:                                     7 pm

Club Competition                This month we will just concentrate on the Mountain Trophy: The set of four on ‘reflections’.
John may talk about ‘being a photographer in London’ and show us some of his shots.

Previous Trophy Winners

Trophy winners from last year would you please bring in your trophies to next meeting.

Trip to Wairere Boulders

This went well, very enjoyable with about 9 people, all very enthusiastic and most doing the long walk.  The weather looked slightly suspect at first but it proved to be perfect, giving good light, slightly overcast and occasionally sunny.

Members that did this walk may like to bring along a few of their best pictures in digital form (memory stick or CD) we will view them on the computer at our next meeting.

Interclub Competition – Whangarei

Congratulations go the Dargaville club for winning this year’s competition.
Annie got top picture for her child study photograph. Congratulations to Annie
Bruce Burgess (our judge) did an enlightening job at critiquing each photograph. He later showed us his work through a data show.  It was stunning, the music as well as the pictures.

Unscheduled impromptu meeting with Ivan

We had an unscheduled meeting on Thursday 23rd October, Ivan Zabak from Apix Photography Supplies, Auckland. Ivan talked to us on colour management, cleaning censors, white balance and whatever subjects came up.  It was very informative and fun.

Catch Up – October 2008 Wednesday, Oct 22 2008

Hi everyone.

We’ve had several things happen this month and I’ve (Denis) not posted anything here – until now. My excuse was being too busy, and tired. Mostly by moving the Kaikohe SeniorNet Learning Centre from one premises to another.

So, time to catch up.

Thursday 9th – Camera Club meeting at Kaikohe. Not many attended this meeting which was a disappointment considering the good turnout lately at previous meetings. For those of you who didn’t come you missed a wonderful talk from Annie on how she works with children while photographing them – her specialty.

Saturday 11th
– the outing to Wairere Boulders at Horeke. The weather looked a bit touch and go but turned out to be ideal for photographing the boulders and bush – cloudy with nice even lighting, no harsh shadows. There were nine of us there and we had a good afternoon out walking the tracks and taking plenty of photographs.

Wednesday 15th – the annual get together at Whangarei for the Northern Interclub pot-luck dinner and competition judging. Four clubs – Wellsford, Dargaville, Whangarei and us (Mid North). Unfortunately the points awarded by the judge were not in our favour and congratulations go the the Dargaville club for winning this year’s competition.

However all was not lost as the top photo trophy was awarded to our Annie for a child study photograph. Congratulations to Annie.

The next event, which occurs before our next meeting, is the Bay of Islands P&I Show at Waimate North on the 8th November. Entry forms for the Photography section can be obtained from McFadziens Pharmacy in Kerikeri or Kaikohe Photographic Centre, or downloaded from here – Entry Form PDF.

Entries may be left at McFadziens Pharmacy in Kerikeri, Kaikohe Photographic Centre, or brought along to the Waimate North Showgrounds on Friday 7th November.

Last Meeting

11th September at Kerikeri
Unfortunately Annie could not do her talk on portraits but we will catch her another time.
The meeting however went well with a good turn out of enthusiastic people.

Denis talked to us about exposure compensation on the camera.  (Denis you always come up with something good)

Alan did a wonderful job taking the workshop on portraits with flash. Thanks Alan, it has encouraged me to learn a lot more.

A table was set up with about 3 month’s photographic work, critiqued by John.  Thanks John, a mammoth task.

Alec spoke about a technique of taking and viewing panorama photos and viewing them on pano2VR.  This allows you to auto rotate in different directions to view in a virtual 3D environment. I type in pano2VR into Google and there are a number of links to follow for those interested in following this up.

Coming meeting – October 9th – Kaikohe
Date:              9th October
Time:              7 pm
Place:             Kaikohe Citizen’s Hall, Tawanui Road, Kaikohe
Club Competition:   All Creatures Great and Small

We haven’t listed a specific talk or activity for this meeting. We will most probably have a live judging of the competition entries and a review of the most recent previous competition photos.

Jill and Denis went to a Whangarei Camera Club workshop on flash photography on the 17th Sept so at some time we will also have a workshop on this subject.

Kerikeri Members Car Pool
Kerikeri members going to Kaikohe for this meeting can car pool.  Meet at the BP garage at 6.30pm.

Club Competition
Our club competition has always included presenting 3 printed pictures; these pictures are collected, critiqued and graded to be given back at a later date.  These grades go toward the end of year awards.

We are also introducing pictures presented in digital format e.g. on a CD or memory stick, these can be view at club meeting on a computer. So as well as your printed pictures, you can also bring along three pictures in digital format and we will view them on the Laptop.  (At this stage these will not be critiqued for end of year awards).
The format should be 1024 pixels at its longest edge and jpg format.

Interclub Competition at Whangarei
Date:     15 October -  Wednesday
Time:     6 p.m.
Place:    Anglican Church, cnr Station Rd & Colenso St, Kamo
To Bring: Food for pot-luck dinner

From the Whangarei Newsletter:
Northern Inter Club night Wed 15 Oct:   To be hosted by Dargaville Camera
Club.  Please make an effort to attend this as it’s a chance to mix & mingle with photographers from the other camera clubs in Northland & see their work in our annual Inter Club competition where each club enters a set of 10 mounted prints.  This year’s subject is “Open” & will be judged by Bruce Burgess who is bringing along some of his own work to show us – this alone is a good reason to attend as he is a stunning photographer who recently gained a Fellowship Distinction from PSNZ in April.  Kick off is around 6.00pm with a Pot Luck dinner (please bring along a contribution for a shared meal), then judging will start at 7.30pm.  There is no Door Fee that night but there is a raffle to help cover hall hire – that’s a polite way of suggesting you bring some small change to support this!
